July 2023 Bond Update: CFI Campus

One of the first major bond projects that you will notice is at the Center for Innovation – West Campus. As most of you know, this is a very old, large and inefficient facility that requires far more TLC than we have funds to provide. With that in mind, we created a plan to demolish approximately half of the current facility (north and northeast sections). This will save the District operational dollars now and into the future, while focusing resources on the areas of the building which remain viable to our academic and athletic programming.

Thus far, district staff, in cooperation with Barton Malow and its partner organizations, have been preparing the site for demolition. It may seem counter-intuitive, but most of the time, energy and resources involved in a demolition are spent long before the first wall comes down.

“This is a process that requires a lot of time on the front end,” said Brian Badder, LCS Director of Operations. “There’s site work related to utilities, asbestos abatement and a lot of heavy lifting from room to room.”

If all goes well, demolition of the site will be completed in early fall. There are additional bond dollars earmarked for facade improvements on the west-facing portion of the facility.
